Most dogs find that once they are a few steps away from you, they can't be controlled as easily. Utilizing a long check chord will begin to teach the dog to behave at a distance. 
All our basic obedience training programs starts with a long check chord to teach the dog proper behavior at a variety of distances. Even if you are planning on implementing the use of an electronic training collar in the training program, you first need to teach the dog the commands without a lot of pressure but maintaining controll over the dog, even at a distance. This can be done very effectively with a check chord 24 foot or 50 foot long. See below. 
The check chord acts as a mild slip lead, as shown below, reinforcing a properly timed reprimand but without too much pressure, thus not dampening the dog's attitude from over correction. Simply clip the lead through the clip and it slides like a slip lead.
